"Maybe, when you're older"

My heart has all the discipline
of a child in a grocery store,
fist-gripped tugging at the hem
of his mother's blouse shouting,
"I Want That! I Want That!"
And when I tell it,
those things aren't for children,
it falls to the floor
and refuses to move,
until I have to drag it
out the front door,
and into the parking lot
screaming;
both of us
exhausted, in tears.

Cold Shower

So often,
we need what we want,
and don't want what we need;
like waking up to a
cold shower,
that snaps the senses alert,
and reminds us of the
present
moment.
